New England Optical Systems, Inc. (NEOS) is a small business currently occupying 23,000 sq. ft. at 237 Cedar Hill Street, Marlborough, Massachusetts. NEOS is the premier supplier of high performance infrared optical assemblies. They are engineering and manufacturing complex infrared optical systems in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR), long wave infrared (LWIR) & short wave infrared (SWIR) wavebands. Their production facility supports development projects and prototyping to high volume production, including programs with stringent environmental requirements. They serve most all thermal imaging markets including Intelligence Reconnaissance & Surveillance (ISR), tracking, navigation, light armored vehicles (LAV), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), aerospace, soldier systems, infrared scene projection, astronomical, and commercial.
NEOS is an engineering and manufacturing company with the proficiencies and all the critical disciplines required to produce an innovative and quality infrared optical product. To successfully execute on the development of an innovative infrared optical system, expertise is required in optical design, opto-mechanical design, electrical design, software design, and the integration of optics, mechanics, and electronics. They have optical engineers on staff designing using the widely known software of Zemax®. NEOS is focused on infrared optical systems, and so the optical engineers at NEOS also have a particular expertise in this area and on the most complex optical designs. In addition to the simpler single field-of-view objective lenses, NEOS is very well known for producing continuous zoom lenses, multi-field of view systems with (discrete fields of view), and also broadband/3rd Gen/multi-channel systems that work over multiple wavebands.
The opto-mechanical engineers at NEOS use the latest version of Solidworks®. In following with the expertise of the optical engineers, the opto-mechanical engineers have proficiency in designing the mechanisms required for continuous zoom and multi-field of view optical systems. In addition to designing the mechanisms to correspond with the required field of view changes, they are also designing for extremely rugged environments. All of the lens assemblies produced by NEOS that require motorization of field of view and/or focus make use of the NEOS Advanced Lens Motion Controller. The engineers at NEOS have designed a comprehensive means of controlling the optical system, with features that are either turned on or off depending on the application.
Beyond designing the optimal lens solution, is executing on a comprehensive plan to build and deliver. The Program Managers at NEOS put together a detailed schedule which is first presented at the Critical Design Review (CDR). This is typically in the form of a Gantt chart using Microsoft Project. They then perform internal weekly program reviews to ensure that milestones are being met, and actions items are recorded and accounted for. Status updates are then provided to the customer proactively on a regular basis.
Lenses by NEOS are assembled in a clean and organized workstation. Production programs are managed using lean manufacturing principles with work instructions on the bench, required tools in place, and parts kitted in barcoded boxes right at the workstation. There are multiple infrared interferometers of various wavelengths that are used for active alignment and optical testing. Further Environment Stress Screening (ESS) is performed on the lens assemblies through the computer controlled thermal chambers and the shock/vibration table.
